Datalogic goes pickFinder Scanner
Datalogic is market leader in the area of automatic data collection and process automatisation. It is, inter alia, specialized on the development and production of barcode readers and mobile computers. The production plant in Trnava, Slovakia, needed support in the commissioning for the production, as well as in warehousing and material supply. Therefore, pickFinder was implemented as scanner-solution in combination with warehousing-functions.

THE STARTING SITUATION
LONG SEARCH TIMES AND PRODUCTION STOPS REDUCE EFFICIENCY SIGNIFICANTLY.
Datalog in Trnava (SK) handles three production lines with two work stations each. So, up to six pickers work at the same time. The material provision by picking list is not guided, what – especially in case of new employees – leads to long search times. Moreover, the picked material is then checked in dual control principle by a second person – what is time and personal intensive.
The replenishment of material is requested by the shift manager. In most cases this happens too late to be able to provide the production lines with material seamlessly. This is due to missing recording of stocks and therefore missing overview for the responsible person. In many cases, replenishment is then requested not before production already is in emergency operation mode.
PICK-BY-LIGHT COMBINED WITH WAREHOUSE-MANAGEMENT AS SOLUTION FOR MATERIAL SHORTAGE AND PRODUCTION STOPS.
In order to make material shortages and production stops a thing of the past, Datalogic implements pickFinder Scanner in combination with some warehouse management functions. 600 material locations get equipped with Pick-by-Light and the pickers are guided safe and simple to the right locations. The visualization of different colors makes processing of more than one order at all working stations simultaneously (Multi-Order-Picking) possible. The system here couples orders for which similar materials are needed – this saves travel time – totally automatic. The pick gets confirmed via a scanner application, which also executes the assignment of orders to the pickers.
The administration of the order management takes place in the user interface. Here, orders can be assigned to the production lines via drag & drop. Furthermore it is possible to check the occupancy of the production lines in real time. For this, the system automatically calculates the time, how long the different production lines are supplied with material. No production line will run dry, as one can see which production line needs new material soon. The executability of orders is proved automatically and is visualized in green, yellow and red. The allocation of material for assigned orders also happens automatically.
The shift manager is always in sight of the status of all production lines and materials via the user interface. He can change the sequence of assigned orders and detect material shortages early and take action. Hence, the supply of the production lines is ensured.
BIG SAVINGS DUE TO SIMPLE PROCESS GUIDANCE AND STOCK MONITORING
The combination of Pick-by-Light and scanner is easy to understand and guides safely through the process. This simple and visual process guidance reduces the training time of new employees significantly.
The error rate after the implementation of the system is only 1ppm (!). Furthermore the picking time is 60% shorter now. The now existing overview of stocks and occupancy of the production lines creates transparency and ideal possibilities for action in the material supply.
